Don’t take your eyes for granted, Dr. Akpata charges Nigerians

Felix Anirah Foundation in conjunction with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, Wednesday organised a day Free Eye Screening and Treatment,  at the Sapele Athletic Club, Golf Pavilion, Sapele, Delta State.

Over 250 patients were screened for eye defects, 25 patients identified to be suffering from Cataract have also been slated for free eye surgical operation, while some with glaucoma will be further screened at UBTH.

 

The 8-man medical team, led by Dr. Efe Akpata, of the Department of Ophthalmology, stated that over 80 people with refractive errors were given free glasses while others were given medications.

 

According to Dr. Akpata, “most people assumes that since they have two eyes, if one is giving them problem and they are unlikely to die from it, they can manage it, but if they are educated that you don’t take your eye for granted and that they can get help and prevent them from losing both eyes inadvertently.

 

She added that unlike Glaucoma which she described as a “silent thief of sight,” because it’s asymptomatic, unless you have your eye checked, cataract can be easily reversed through eye surgical operation and the sufferer can get his vision restored.

 

Dr. Akpata stated further that Felix Anirah Foundation in its magnanimity has promised to foot the bill for the free cataract surgical operation, and soon those affected will be contacted and they will be brought to the eye department of UBTH for the sugary.

 

Commending Felix Anirah Foundation for the great work it’s doing in touching the lives of the underprivileged in the country, Rotarian Ikponwsa Ogiemudia (District Governor Elect, District 9140 Nigeria) added Rotary will work out ways to collaborate with the foundation.

 

He called on other well to do Nigerians to emulate the good work of the President /CEO of the Foundation, Chief Felix Anirah saying; “If one man can be doing this, I think collectively we can do more, so I want to appeal to others to support the good work.

 

President /CEO of the Foundation, Chief Felix Anirah, while appreciating the medical team and the management of UBTH for the collaboration, promised to take the free eye treatment programme to Edo state and Kanduan state soonest.
