Free Medical Care: Anirah Foundation/UBTH brings hope to Deltans

In their quest to check rising cases of blindness in the rural communities, the Felix Anirah Foundation in conjunction with University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, weekend, organised a   2-Day Free Medical Outreach to at Adagbrassa-Elume, Sapele local government area of Delta State.

In the 2-day programmee, patients’ mostly rural folk, were screened for eye defects and   about 12 aged people were discovered to suffering from cataracts which are in different stages and have been booked for free eye surgical operation at UBTH in a weeks’ time.

 

Screening and Treatment, free glasses and medications were also given to those with minor eye problems, while about 16 people suspected to be suffering from Glaucoma were referred ether to the UBTH or Delta State University Teaching Hospital, (DELSUTH) Oghara for further medical examinations.

 

The team also screened and treated people suffering from Diabetes and Hypertension, drugs were given and they were also referred to general hospital for further medical attention.

 

The medical team leader, Prof. (Mrs.) A.I. Osahon, Consultant Ophthalmologist from the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, in a chart with our correspondent stated that many Nigerians are dying of preventable and treatable medical condition, but the lack access to good medical facilities.

 

While emphasizing the rising cases of preventable blindness in Nigeria, Prof. Osahon explained that more 1% of the about 180million Nigerians are blind and many of these people are rural duelers.

 

She urged Nigerians to visit eye doctor at least once a year, stressing that Glaucoma which is the primary causes of blindness does not cause  eye pains but causes great irreversible damage to the eye, adding that early detection is key to preventing Glaucoma induced blindness.

 

The Consultant Ophthalmologist therefore urged good spirited Nigerians to supports the Felix Anirah Foundation to sustain the program every year and also advised Nigerians on the need for a regular eye check up, as this will help to reduce the problems of eye defect.

 

On his part, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, Chief (Hon.) Felix Anirah, expressed gratitude to Almighty God for the privilege to put smiles on the faces of the less privilege in the society.

 

His words” it is my passion that the needy, the helpless are given assistance through free health care intervention, to meet their health needs. You can see from the response of people who came for free services today. So, we have recorded over three hundred person which is quite reasonable; these are persons who could have died for lack of financial support.

 

“So, we are ready, determined to ensure that the widows, helpless and the orphans are given the needed assistance with the little that we have as we looking forward to what the future holds for our next line of action”.
