Professor Ibadin Okoeguale Michael: Medical Team Leader

Prof. Ibadin Okoeguale Michael was born in late 50s to a humble family of Oga Ibadin of blessed memory and Mrs. Fatima Ibadin both of Uromi, Esan North East LGA of Edo State. He had his elementary education at Utako Primary School, Uromi. His secondary education was at St. Malachy’s College, Sapele as a Government scholar. He had a stint as a tutor at Uromi Technical College before proceeding to read Medicine at the University of Benin between 1980 and 1986. His mandatory National service was at the then Sokoto University Teaching Hospital where he served subsequently as a Registrar in Surgery before coming back to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for his residency training in Paediatrics.  He is a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

He started his academic career in 1995 at the University of Benin and was promoted Professor of Paediatrics 10 years later in 2005. Prof. Ibadin also holds a Master of Science degree in Immunology and Immunochemistry and another Master degree in Public Administration. He has held several positions at both the University of Benin and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. He was appointed Chief Medical Director, the University of Benin Teaching Hospital in 2009. Before then and at various times he served as HOD, Child Health, DCMAC and CMAC. Under his watch the first Stem Cell Transplant in West Africa took place. He served as the key catalyst of the activities that culminated in the introduction of Bachelors Degree Programme in Physiotherapy at the University of Benin. He is widely travelled and has presented several papers at National and International conference. He has won several awards for excellence in Administration, Human Capital Development, Management and Teaching.

Outside Medicine he has full grasp of Politics, Political Economy, Economics, Management, labour matters and administration. Foundations for these were laid in the 70s when he obtained the General Certificate of Education, Advanced Level in the Social Sciences.  Widely quoted, he has over 90 publications in National and International Journals and has supervised over 20 Fellowship dissertations. He is a recourse person to both the National and West Africa Postgraduate Medical Colleges and examiner to National Postgraduate Medical Colleges. In the same College he also served as a member of both the Court of Examiners and Faculty Board. He is a reviewer, sub-editor and editor several journals. He has also served external examiner and assessor to several Nigeria Universities.

A strong disciplinarian, Prof. Ibadin is an urbane character with penchant for excellence and details. Fair minded and hard working, he is a detribalized Nigerian. A strong believer in honesty, integrity, diligence, loyalty and commitment to set targets.

Embodiment of humility, asserts that a man has nothing that is not given to him by God. Prof. Ibadin is happily married with children (two medical doctors, two accountants and a lawyer) and grand children. He loves reading, football and golf.
